Well lately I've been looking at buying a new car. I have been looking at several makes and models inc the Ford GT Mustang. But what can I say, I've always had a thing for MOPAR MUSCLE!!! I'm kind of partial to the new Dodge Charger, (maybe because I currently own a 1967 Charger), so I test drove the 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 with a 6.1 L Hemi that puts out a rated 425 hp. Boy did that car car fly!!! I was almost sold and ready to sign the papers. but then I saw pics of the 2008 Chrysler Challanger that is suppose to be released next year. Now I may just have to wait. It looks awesome!!!!

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> When Dodge unveiled the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger into its lineup, performance-car aficionados had a lot to celebrate. The party gets kicked up a notch with the introduction of the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8.

With its infusion of Street and Racing Technology (SRT) DNA, Dodge hopes that the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 provides exactly what performance enthusiasts want in their American muscle sedan: more power, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking, functional and aggressive-looking exterior enhancements and a race-inspired interior.

“The all-new Dodge Charger embodies all of the key attributes of the Dodge brand – bold, powerful, street-smart and full of life,” said Darryl Jackson, Vice President, Dodge Marketing, Chrysler Group. “The all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the Dodge formula. It starts with a 425-horsepower 6.1-liter HEMI engine and continues with a powerful dose of renowned Street and Racing Technology performance for a tremendous performance-per-dollar value story.”

During the heyday of the original Dodge Charger, performance was measured mainly in straight-line numbers. Today, SRT adds a complete approach with the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8.

“The SRT approach to performance is multi-dimensional,” said Dan Knott, Director, Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler Group. “For example, the 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 incorporates Brembo brakes to stop as well as it accelerates. Its handling is world-class across a dynamic range. Its interior is designed specifically for the performance driver. And its performance exterior characteristics don’t just look great, they’re also functional.”

As an all-around performer, the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 is capable of awe-inspiring numbers unheard-of in a muscle sedan: 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds, quarter-mile time in the 13-second range and braking distance from 60-0 mph in approximately 110 feet. The Dodge Charger SRT8 is also capable of accomplishing SRT’s signature performance test of 0-100-0 mph in the mid 16-second range.

Exterior

Functional performance is at the heart of the SRT credo. To that end, an all-new front fascia includes integrated ducts that help direct fresh air to cool the brakes. The front fascia also incorporates an air dam to reduce lift. The hood is equipped with a scoop to funnel cool air into the engine compartment.

The rear fascia features integrated lower strakes to direct air flow and aggressive cutouts to accommodate dual 3.5-inch exhaust tips. A dramatic decklid spoiler set on dual stanchions increases downforce for high-speed stability and traction.

Interior

Race-inspired interior appointments in the 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 start with power-adjustable, deeply sculpted and highly bolstered sport seats in the front fitted with performance suede inserts to hold occupants during maneuvering. Rear seats have matching performance suede inserts. All seats have contrasting red stitching.

Other sporting touches include “carbon fiber” technical leather trim on the steering wheel for better grip, and special finishing on the center stack.

A 180-mph (300 kph) speedometer, tachometer and temperature gauge feature dark faces unique to the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8. An LED display within the gauge cluster is driver-configurable for oil temperature, oil pressure and tire pressure readouts.

Powertrain

Just as the very first Charger – the original 1964 “Charger by Dodge” concept car - sported a HEMI V-8, the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 gets its motivation from a HEMI, too. In this case, it’s a big-bore, SRT-engineered version producing 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.

Several features of the new 6.1-liter SRT HEMI recall the legendary HEMI engines of previous decades, including the namesake hemispherical combustion chambers that provide power and efficiency, orange-painted cylinder block, black valve covers, and even the horsepower rating (with less displacement, the 6.1-liter HEMI’s 69.8 horsepower-per-liter rating exceeds that of the legendary Street HEMI of the 1960s and ‘70s).

To create the 6.1-liter version of the Chrysler Group’s HEMI, SRT powertrain engineers applied tried-and-true engine-building tricks honed by generations of American hot-rodders.

They unleashed 85 more horsepower by adding more cubic inches, increasing the compression ratio, redesigning the cylinder head, intake and exhaust systems for increased flow, and increasing engine speed.

For more displacement, SRT engineers bored out the diameter of the cylinders in the HEMI by 3.5 millimeters each in order to increase the total displacement to 6.1 liters from 5.7 liters.

That's right a 2008 Dodge Challenger! As you can see in the new photos below, the new Challenger was designed highly with the 1970 - 1974 Dodge Challengers in mind. The accent line, the hood, stripe, the headlights, and pretty much the overall shape are all similar to the 1970 - 1974 Dodge Challenger. Dodge definitely did it's research on the 2008 Dodge Challenger.
The first rumors were saying that the new Dodge Challenger was going to be available in 2009, but the latest rumors are that the new Dodge Challenger will be available for the model year of 2008.

The 2008 Dodge Challenger will be based on the LY Platform (the updated version of the LX platform). It will share the updated LY platform with the Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 and the Magnum. The new platform will be able to hold a manual transmission along with an automatic transmission. The Dodge Challenger will be rear wheel drive, and have what everyone wanted, two doors. The starting price on the 2008 Dodge Challenger will be around $28,000.

<hr> What engines will there be available in the 2008 Dodge Challenger? We don't know for sure right now, but there will definitely be a Hemi available. Like the Dodge Charger I think the top engine will be the 6.1 Hemi which produces 425 HP. There has been some rumors though of them using the new 392 Hemi. There will likely be a V6 engine available also.
You are probably wondering when will we see an official Concept Car of the 2008 Dodge Challenger. Well you don't have to wait much longer because it is scheduled to debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, which is in January of 2006!
Will they bring back the different versions like the R/T, SE, and T/A for the 2008 Dodge Challenger? They will almost for surely bring back the R/T and SE versions. For the T/A version, we don't know yet, but the Charger had the Daytona edition so along the same lines they could bring it back. They will also likely have the SRT version available too.
What do you think of the new Dodge Challenger? Discuss it on the Dodge Challenger Forum (http://www.stockmopar.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=2).

That Challenger sure looks sweet, but I've always prefered it to the Charger no matter what years you compare.

Question: Do those two have throttle-by-wire?

If I didn't care about a computer intercepting my right-foot's input and doing whatever the algorithm's thought best, I'd be funding for a new Mustang. But Ford is just like Honda and Toyota and BMW and Mercedez with that whole thing about a computer having to do part of the driver's job. I have only one sentiment about computer controlled throttle...Well fuck that!

Anyhoo, I've heard via car buff forums that throttle-by-wire doesn't play nice with manual shift cars. The computer is always trying to move the RPMs somewhere else. Blipping the throttle doesn't make them peak as high as you intended,... and they don't fall back down quickly either. That sucks in a "driver's car".

BTW: Chargers are big n' ugly. Challenger looks better, but it looks just like an old Camaro. Plus, what a lame inferiority-complex inspired name for it... they may have as well called it the Wannabe Mustang.

ok, who let the Ford guy in the DC thread? JK.

I had not seen any Challenger info/pics but that thing got me kinda excited. If you are single or don't need the car for family vacations....go smoke some ricers with the Challenger. A buddy of mine with a new family has the Charger and LOVES it and from first hand experience that Hemi just makes it fun to drive no matter how many doors it has. 100mph is just too damn easy to reach for my daily driving.

Whatever you do, get the SRT-8 version. I drove it, too, and it is intoxicating. So much raw power. It's my favorite engine since the Mercedes-AMG 5.5L.

I would personally wait for the new Camaro (2008-2009), the high-performance version will have the Corvette engine. Although I still like the Hemi engine better!

If I do get one of these, it would Definitely be a SRT-8 model!!!

And yea, the next generation Camero looks pretty sweet, especially if they do make a SS version w/the Vette motor. Here something interesting, I also ck'd out the new Pontiac Solstice. Cute little sports car, but not enough power for me. But what really intreged me was there is a conversion availble from Mallett that would install the Corvette LS2 motor!!!! Can you imagine that? A 400 bhp motor in a car no bigger than a Mazda Miata. I bet with this coversion, this car would fly!!!! Check out this link.

the Challenger is going to be a god on the road.. however id say it has to come down to whats practical for you. The charger is pretty practical, but who cares about being practical

If you want to be realistic and not have to wait, go for the Charger...that Challenger shown is not what will be put into production (remember what the original Charger concept looked like compared to what's produced now??) Daimler is going to shave off $5-10,000 of cosmetics on that...and some of the pics are CG, especially the interrior...

You can wait and see what they do shave off from the Challenger, or get a decent "muscle" car now...the factory is about 10 Km from where I'm at now, wanna pick one up?

Commenting on the throttle by wire talk mentioned:

By nature, some of the new BMW's NEED to be throttle by wire to handle the valvetronic system...it would be a complicated, and probably unreliable system if it was completely mechanical. I've heard only good news about this technology...but we'll see in the long run.

Unfortunately, the day of the manual transmission seems to be numbered, makes me very sad.

But to get back on topic: out of those two, I would go for the charger...sucks that it's a 4-door, but overall I like it more. Will have to wait to see the production challenger...
