Hello everyone! I'm in big need of some help from any tech-savvy people here as far as this subject is concerned. You see, I just got myself a new DVD burner and wanted to test it out by burning a couple of movies I've d/led onto my hard drive. I believe the movies are in .avi or XviD format. How can I convert or burn these files onto DVD+R discs so that they will play on a standard DVD player? Also, what programs do I need (All I have right now is DVD Decrypter) to accomplish the task? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If they are avi etc you usually have to convert them to svcd or vcd.
If they are ISO or some other image file it will burn it just like a dvd.

Thanks for the replies, Funk & Supraman! I purchased the drive brand-new, but it didn't come with any software package/bundle. As for DVD authoring software, is Nerovision one of the best programs out there? I'm looking for a program that is reliable in burning data to DVD as well. Any suggestions?

nerovision came with my burner and is the only authoring program that i've used, so i have nothing to compare it to. but i've been happy with the results - making menus with thumbnails, creating chapter marks, and playing them in various dvd players.

as for data discs i've also used nero, but there is probably something out there that is more reliable

I was reading some reviews about Nerovision/Nero 7 Ultra Edition so I'll probably start looking for that soon. So is Nerovision a kind of "all-in-one" utility/program for making DVDs then? What I mean is does it take care of everything you need to do (converting your .avi files, encoding, etc.) to the point where all you have to worry about is put in the blank disc? If so, that'd be great :D

yep. it can take awhile to complete the transcode (about 6 hours for a full movie for me), but it does everything for you. the most labor intensive part is making the menus, which you don't have to do if you don't want them.

Cool! :D 6 hours of waiting isn't much of a price to pay if it does everything for me. Thanks again, Funk!

I'd get discjuggler as well since some of the dvd rips are .iso files and nero doesn't seem to like to read those.

Nero can burn .iso...but if u want 2 burn .img...then use DVDdecrypter...as 4 conversion...there r loads of programs that can do that...I just DL DVD's instead of dl xvid or divx...then again...I can also play Divx and xvid 2 play on TV through my Xbox, PC or my Freecom MediaPlayer...

why not invest in a divx dvd player?? Costco has a $69.99 toshiba thats plays avi(divx) and mpg files no problem..just burn the avi's to dvd-r as a data disc and pop it in your player...you can fit 5 to 6 movies onto one disc.
