My buddy put me on to this guy, and he's a trip to watch fight. He's got the craziest ring entrances since Prince Naseem Hamed, he dances in the ring while fighting, and turns his back on his opponents, walks away and spins back with a punch or a kick. Amidst all the goofiness, he's actually a pretty damn good fighter--just check out that spinning back fist knockout. These are a couple of pretty nice fights I've found. The vid isn't the highest quality, but it's a good match against a Korean Taekwondo fighter, and the second is against Royler Gracie, yet another of the endless Gracie family.

Wanderlei Silva: CroCop slice his head open and his eyes were hamburger
Rich Franklin: you guys seen the nose from Silva's knees
Mark Coleman: Fedor decimating his face.
Karo Parisyan: Diego Sanchez knocked out his tooth with a knee to the chin.

I'm going to find pictures.

Anything you guys like to add

I saw a knockout once on UFC where the fighter was actually ruled unconcious while he was still standing. After the fight, his cornerman had to steer him to the backstage area. He was all over the place. lol Not sure who was in the fight, but it was hysterical. lol

Best beatdown I`ve seen was probably Rich Franklins 5 round pummeling of David Loiseau
http://img1.imagetitan.com/img1/1/34/david496.jpg

Favourite Beatdown though was easily Anderson Silva`s total sub minute demolition of Chris "I`ll show him pain...not!" Leben lol

Have yet to see the Cro-Cop Vs Silva scrap...anyone got a link for it?

CroCop: looked sharp against Wanderlei Silva who he KO'd and knock out Josh Barnett with body shot, won the OWGP on his birthday to fight Fedor for the title.

Anderson Silva: the most impressive fighter of the year, from unrank to possibly the number 1 rank fighter in his weight class in 2 fights.

George St. Pierre: beat the top 2 fighters in his weight class to be rank number 1.

Mike Swick: won his last 3 fights and is the next middle weightchampionship contender

Yoshihiro Akiyama: beat Mevlin Manhoef to become K-1 gp champion.

Paulo Filho: was suppose to fight in the middle weight gp Pride title.

Denis Kang: won 6 fights this year, came out this year. Like Filho is becoming a household name.

In light of recent domination,Georgy gets my vote :077:

Cro-Cop is probably my favourite HW in all organisations and I hope he does the biz against Fedor.

Dennis Kang has really impressed in all showings this year and I mark him down as a Champion in waiting for `07.

I gave my vote for Georges St. Pierre. Out of all the other contenders on the list, he probably had the biggest win of the year, defeating Matt Hughes. When you beat someone as dominant as Hughes, you've got to be on top of your game.

nope, fighter of the year for 2006, not decade. Fedor only fought Mark Coleman this year which he made his face look like hamburger.

In that case cro cop for winning the GP and then a close second for GSP for taking his first title.

There are fans of Mixed-Martial Arts here. But how many of you knew of the origins of Ultimate Fighting and Pancrase?

Boxing in ancient Greece had fewer rules than boxing today. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. There was no rule that prevented a boxer from hitting an opponent when he was down. There was no weight class in either the men's or boy's divisions and the contestants were chosen randomly. The boxers did not wear gloves but wrapped their hands and wrists with leather straps called himantes. Their fingers were left free.Boxing matches had no time limit and ended only when one boxer held up his hand or fell to the ground.

It's also important to note that body shots were taboo, and considered vulgar, not chivalrous. Face and head shots only, sometimes by striking the opponent's hands, driving them back into his face.

Pankration: It was a combination of boxing and wrestling. The only things outlawed were biting and gouging out an opponent's eyes. Athletes didn't wear boxing gloves, but they could hold an opponent with one hand and hit him with another, unlike in boxing. The hands were not wrapped in the leather himantes. Two versions of the pankration were offered. In the first, whoever hit the ground first lost; in the second, whoever lost consciousness first lost. Soldiers were usually very good at this sport, and it was not unusual for pankration athletes to be seriously injured or even die.
Kicking in any part of the body was allowed. There were separate divisions for men and boys but like in boxing there was no weight division and the opponents were chosen at random.

Pankration was resurrected in the 20th century as Pancrase, or Ultimate Fighting. More rules, and safety measures were added.

sandler
January 17th, 2007, 08:01 PM
in addition to that, pankration fighters were adored by the masses. some of them even ended up getting goverment positions. its like your modern day baller.

some say that the greeks used a lot of pankration when they invaded india. after, they taught the locals pankration thats why martial arts historians have found several proofs that india had their own version of pankration way before anyone else, except in greece of course.

pankration was revived again and some of its most notable practitioners are matt hume and josh barnett.

January 18th, 2007, 07:13 PM
Pankration? The word sounds like it's some sort of painful medical procedure. With that said, for some reason I can't change the channel when modern "pankration" is on TV. It's too addicting. I heard/read somewhere that it's more popular than boxing these days.

sandler
January 18th, 2007, 08:30 PM
i think MMA is slowly taking the popularity of boxing. the fights are definetely more exciting. the UFC has done a really good job in promoting the sport.

zoltek
January 18th, 2007, 10:05 PM
The fights are definitely more exciting...though I could do a little less with the on-the-mat grappling when the fighters are too damn tired to do anything else and all we see is the two of them fighting for position.

It seems like boxing would be more dangerous. With boxing you've got gloves so you can repeatedly hit to the hit throughout a match...getting in dozens of strong hits in. With MMA, you don't get as much a repetition of solid hit, because one or two is usually enough to win a match.

sandler
January 19th, 2007, 04:31 AM
also, in MMA, you dont necessarily get hit on the head and body as much as in boxing because fights can be over with submissions. maurice smith said it himself that MMA is much safer than kick boxing and boxing, and he used to do the former before entering MMA.

BigDaddy_GFS
January 19th, 2007, 11:11 AM
Agreed. MMA fighters don't get punch-drunk like boxers. Aside from cauliflower ears (like those insane hunks of raw flesh dangling from Couture and Hughes' heads), they don't seem to get the chronic health issues of boxers, or even football players.

Sure, guys get injured, and sure, age can aggravate things -- knees, back, shoulder, etc...But the whole 'hazardous' aspect that gets played in the media seems grossly out of line.

She;s cute, tight, funny, and Italian. WTF more could you ask for?:D
Though she's a bad-ass gladiatrix, she shouldn't be bringing a face like that into the ring.

Elite Xtreme Combat is a new mixed martial arts venue that is coming to us through the joint efforts of Pro Elite Incorporated and Showtime Networks. That's right, mixed martial arts has now made its way to the Showtime Network.

And if you're thinking it's just one event- think again. It appears that Elite XC will put on several events over the next few years in conjunction with Showtime. In fact, in an interview with BoxingTalk.com, President of Elite XC Live Events Division, Gary Shaw, indicated that, "we'll probably put on six events in 2007, eight in 2008, and ten to twelve in 2009."

Word of advice: think up your argument before opening your mouth to the wife about getting Showtime. You may only get one chance.

Adding to the previously-announced main event pitting Frank Shamrock (Pictures) and Renzo Gracie (Pictures), Showtime and Elite XC revealed eight bouts for their Feb. 10 mixed martial arts debut at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss.

Televised contests include Shamrock-Gracie; Antonio Silva (Pictures) taking to the cage versus Wesley Correira (Pictures) in a super heavyweight clash; quality middleweights David Loiseau (Pictures) and Joey Villasenor (Pictures) meeting for the first time; lightweights KJ Noons and Charles Bennett (Pictures) coming together for a potentially quick fight; and Gina Carano (Pictures) making her Showtime debut against a yet-to-be determined opponent.
