Yesterday I upgraded to Firefox 1.5. I didn't necessarily intend to, but I did, so that's that! Ultimately, I'm pretty happy with it.
Pros:
Seems to work about the same :p
<BR>
In 1.0, the Bookmarks list often annoyed me. When you moved the mouse over one of the arrows (up or down) to scroll, it had a tendency to continue scrolling forever; you'd have to mouse over the other arrow to get it to stop, and even then you might just watch it scroll all the way the other way. I would take great care not to accidentally mouse over those arrows! :) That doesn't happen anymore, and it makes me very happy.
<BR>
Moveable Tabs - It's pretty neat. I have a suspicion it might create some odd problem on occasion; see the 'Cons' section for that.
<BR>
History - Either you couldn't sort history by site in 1.0 or I never figured out how. For me, the History always just showed every freakin link you'd seen. Now, I can order it by site, making it a lot easier to navigate the history section.
<BR>
Increased compatibility - I never had serious problems with Firefox, and I still believe IE displays pages less correctly than FF - you have to accommodate for IE's mistakes when you're coding a site - but every once in a while I'd find some crazy site that didn't display properly in Firefox. Usually these sites used crazy <span style='position:relative; left: -20px;'>absolute positioning</span> (Ok, that was actually relative positioning but you get the idea) to create their layouts. Fortunately, I can now view those pages without a problem.
<BR>
No annoying popup on timeout - You've undoubtedly had a site timeout on you in Firefox and seen the annoying popup that tells you so. I recall some method of turning that feature off, but I never bothered with it. :) In v1.5, it gives you a nice HTML error page that lets you know it timed out, and there's even a button to click to try again (so you can just refresh the page by clicking the button if you need to).
Cons:
Extension Compatibility - This problem probably kept me from upgrading to 1.5 more than anything. Sure enough, my upgrade to 1.5 left me with only 1 (out of about 7) working extension. Happily, I managed to get my favorite extension -- webCache -- to work again my modifying its install file in about 5 seconds. I just changed its 'max version' variable from 1.2 to 1.9 or something (I probably could have just used 1.5), and now it works fine. :) However, I don't know if re-enabling all previous extensions (of the hundreds available) would prove so simple. I would imagine a large number of them would carry over in a similar fashion, but it's possible that some extensions would no longer work quite right in Firefox 1.5.
<BR>
Allow sites to install software? - In FireFox 1.0, the options menu allowed you to decide whether or not to allow sites to install software on your computer. Since I didn't really want anyone doing such a thing, I unchecked that checkbox! :) The geniuses at Mozilla apparently decided to remove that option in 1.5. To increase their ingenuity, they nonetheless imported your previous setting. Thus, my browser remained set on "Do not allow sites to install software," and because the checkbox no longer appears, I could not change my preference any longer! I had to use about:config to change this option back so that I could reinstall my webCache extension; I don't understand at all why they felt the need to remove that option.
<BR>
Keyboard errors - On a couple of occasions, I have had strange keyboard errors. I was typing a message on some forum yesterday, and I decided I wanted to change something I had previously typed. Naturally, I pressed the up arrow to start skipping up the lines I had typed; unnaturally, the cursor refused to move! I could move it to the left or right I believe, and I could use the mouse to instantly click the cursor to any position, but I simply could not move the cursor with the up or down arrows.
Later, I had another strange error at google.com. I was typing in a URL (so that it would give me a hotlink to click); I typed it ***.com, and then I pressed the slash key. Did a slash appear at the end of ***.com? No; Firefox opened the 'Find in this page' feature (ala CTRL+F). I tried repeatedly to add a slash, but I could not do so. I could type slashes in the Firefox search box, but not the google search box. I even tried to copy and paste a slash from the FF box to the google box; that didn't even work for some strange reason! I opened a new tab with google and it worked then, but I have no idea* what went wrong in the first tab.
* - Let me qualify no idea with "I have a vague theory." I think it may have something to do with moveable tabs. I think I had been entertaining myself by moving tabs around right before this happened. Possibly, tabbed browsing can create small errors such as these keyboard errors. I have no idea if this actually caused any problems or not, though.

Do NOT update to Firefox 1.5 yet. I am starting to wish I hadn't updated.
The power went out earlier this evening, and when I rebooted, all of my firefox settings (customized icons, cookies, etc.) were reset to default. Not cool at all. Plus it took a special trick to get things working again; it wouldn't even let me set new bookmarks for a while. Then there's this cursor issue. What kind of freakin morons can't even get the cursor to work properly sometimes? WTF are they thinking having the / key and ' key open the 'find toolbar' in the first place?! I mean, that makes no f'ing sense at all! It is simply ridiculous. If the browser is smart enough to display that blinking cursor when you click on a text box, why on earth is the stupid freakin think too stupid to understand that THAT'S WHERE YOU'RE TYPING!? Sigh. Everything else I mentioned in the 'pros' column is nice, but if this thing gets to defaulting my custom settings every time my computer locks up or the power goes out, I will be doing whatever I can to revert ot version 1.0 as quickly as possible.

Yea, I checked my version and i have 1.8.20060.50817 already. Theres nothing really to not like about it right now. Theres been plenty of new updates for it over the past months and a few new versions. About two weeks ago It alerted me that a new version was out and to update.

Well, of course. You obviously know my computer better than me.
Seriously. All it takes is a glimpse at any mozilla forum to see user upon user with problem upon problem. Some people won't have problems. A lot of people do.

Greetings ALl,
Just wondering if someone can help me with this? Everytime I push th apostrophe/quotation mark key (just left of the enter key) it brings up the conrol F Find function. I find it highly annoying and I would like it stop. Is there a way to undo this? Just wondering and thanks!

That's a "feature." The apostrophe is a hotkey for "find as you type." (See Firefox Help) (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/keyboard) I think you can turn this off if you want to.
However, what I find happens is that it sometimes gets confused and activates the "find as you type" when you're entering text in a form field. That's a bug I think. I get that at work but not at home. I compared all my configurations, and the only difference wrt typeaheadfind was the timeout before the search box disappears.
Anyway, it seems to be some kind of focus issue. Copy and paste gets screwed up too. If you click on another application then click back into the Firefox window, it should behave normally again. Problem is 30 minutes later you'll have to do it again.

Well... you can turn it off under Tools->Options->Advanced->General by unchecking "Begin finding when you begin typing" or by toggling the setting accessibility.typeaheadfind to false in about:config.
However, I have "turned this off" myself, and I still have the problem when typing in text boxes sometimes. So I don't think it's going to do you any good.

Yes, firefox is already pretty **** fast but did you know that you can tweak it and improve the speed even more?
That's the beauty of this program being open source.
Here's what you do:
In the URL bar, type “about:config” and press enter. This will bring up the configuration “menu” where you can change the parameters of Firefox.
Note that these are what I’ve found to REALLY speed up my Firefox significantly - and these settings seem to be common among everybody else as well. But these settings are optimized for broadband connections - I mean with as much concurrent requests we’re going to open up with pipelining… lol… you’d better have a big connection.
Double Click on the following settins and put in the numbers below - for the true / false booleans - they’ll change when you double click.
Code:
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300
One more thing… Right-click somewhere on that screen and add a NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Since you’re broadband - it shouldn’t have to wait.
Now you should notice you’re loading pages MUCH faster now!

firefox 2.0 new tabbed browsing scheme was driving me nuts. here's some info i found on how to get it back to the way it was before.
i found it all on this page (http://lifehacker.com/software/firefox-2/geek-to-live-top-firefox-2-config-tweaks-209941.php) which has some other good tweaks too. happy browsing :D
How to modify Firefox's configuration (about:config)
All this "advanced config" talk got you worried? Fear not, my friend. Here's the deal: Firefox's configuration is a long list of keys and values. To view this list, type about:config into the Firefox address bar. Then, enter the name of the key you want to update in the "Filter" field. The list will narrow to only the entries that match your keyword as you type.
Minimum Tab Width (Tab Scrolling)
Fx 2.0 only: The biggest interface changes in Firefox 2 involve tabbed browsing. Power surfers who open more than a dozen tabs will notice that Firefox 2 minimizes tabs to a certain width, then sets the excess to scroll off the tab bar with left and right arrows. As someone who often has more than a dozen tabs open, not being able to see them all made me crazy. One solution is to reduce the minimum tab width so that more tabs fit in the bar before the scroll kicks in. The default is 100 pixels; I found that 75 worked better for me. To disable tab scrolling entirely, set the value to 0.
Key: browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
Modified Value: 75 (fit in more tabs before overflow enables scroll)
Alternate Modified Value: 0 (disable scroll entirely)
Default: 100
Tab Close Buttons
Fx 2.0 only: Another tab interface change in Firefox 2 is the addition of a close button on each individual tab. I happen to love this, but some hate it, saying it causes them to accidentally close a tab when just trying to switch to it. If you're a hater, revert to the Firefox 1.5 behavior by changing the browser.tabs.closeButtons value to 3. This will not display close tabs on individual tabs, and turn on a single close tab button at the right end of the tab bar.
Key: browser.tabs.closeButtons
Modified Value: 3 (revert to Firefox 1.5 behavior)
Alternate Modified Value: 2 (don't display any close tab buttons)
Default: 1 (display close buttons on all tabs)
List all Tabs Button
Add the following code to the (or create a) userchrome.css file in the chrome folder of your Firefox user profile in the Application Data tree.
/* Disable "List all Tabs" Button */
.tabs-alltabs-button {
display: none !important;
}
/* Disable Container box for "List all Tabs" Button */
.tabs-alltabs-box {
display: none !important;
}

Anyone who uses Firefox on Windows knows the browser has an almost insatiable appetite for memory, and it's not unheard of for PCs to allocate a half GB or more of memory just to the browser alone.
Mozilla continues to deny that Firefox leaks much memory, but Christopher Blizzard, a member of Mozilla's board, says fixing the issue is a priority - - especially now that the browser developers are seeking to plow directly into the mobile space.
Writes Blizzard:
As Mozilla starts down the path to running in the mobile space we are spending time looking at memory pressure issues more closely. . . (I)t sounds like the early data suggests that Mozilla really doesn't leak that much memory at all. But it does thrash the allocator pretty hard and that's what causes the perception of memory leaks.
Blizzard refers to findings of developer Stuart Parmenter, which contains more information about memory and browser use than you'd probably ever want to know. Parmenter attributes the problem to "memory fragmentation." Whatever it is, it can cause a PC to grind to such slow performance that sometimes it's just easier to "X" out of Firefox or reboot altogether.
Now, imagine that happening on a smart phone, and getting in the way of your ability to make or receive phone calls. This is just one of the many challenges Mozilla and its developers face as they try to move from the PC to the handheld arena.
"Over the next few months it will be very interesting to see what happens with both memory usage and perceived performance especially as we connect those numbers to a successful mobile strategy," Blizzard writes.

I am running Vista Premium and have Firefox up and running with two tabs open.
I opened IE and with two tabs it shows 46,700 K memory usage with one page open.
I opened Firefox with the same two tabbed pages and it showed 33,500 K memory used.
IE was sucking more than necessary from my system.

The most memory I have ever seen FF taking up on my laptop is 98 MB. Usually it is 40-50 MB. I agree that there is a memory leak, but I have never seen 500 MB.
Firefox is still one of the best apps ever. And the fact that it is free and always improving and expanding makes it a must-have and must-use application.

Found this on another forum. Worked for me.
Firefox is in my opinion the best browser ever made until now.
It includes:
improved tabbed browsing
pop up blocking
integrated Goggle search
enhanced privacy controls
built-in phishing protection
online spell checking
lots of themes, interfaces, and extensions/addons
Mozilla Firefox officially supports:
Microsoft Windows
Linux
Mac OS X
Unofficial Support:
Free BSD
OS/2
Solaris
SkyOS
BeOS
XP Professional x64 Edition
Now here are some Tips&Tricks that can help you double the speed of Firefox.
1. Type about:config in the address bar and then press Enter.
2. In the filter search bar type network.http.pipelining Be sure the value field is set true,if not double-click to set true. HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.
3. Go back to the filter search bar and type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Double-click this option and set its value to 8.
4. In the filter search bar and type network.http.proxy.pipelining Once opened doubleclick on it and set it to true.
5. In IPv6-capable DNS servers, an IPv4 address may be returned when an IPv6 address is requested. It is possible for Mozilla to recover from this misinformation, but a significant delay is introduced.
Type network.dns.disableIPv6 in the filter search bar and set this option to true by double clicking on it.
6. CONTENT INTERRUPT PARSING
This preference controls if the application will interrupt parsing a page to respond to UI events. It does not exist by default. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu. Then:
A. Enter content.interrupt.parsing in the New boolean value pop-up window and click OK
B. When prompted to choose the value for the new boolean, select true and click OK.
7. Rather than wait until a page has completely downloaded to display it to the user, Mozilla applications will regularly render what has been received to that point. This option controls the maximum amount of time the application will be unresponsive while rendering pages. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.max.tokenizing.time in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 2250000 and click OK.
8. CONTENT NOTIFY INTERVAL
This option sets the minimum amount of time to wait between reflows. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Type content.notify.interval in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.
9. CONTENT NOTIFY ONTIMER
A. This option sets if to reflow pages at an interval any higher than that specified by content.notify.interval. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu.
B. Type content.notify.ontimer in the New boolean value pop-up window and click OK.
C. You will be prompted to choose the value for the new boolean. Select true and click OK.
10. Notify Backoffcount
This option controls the maximum number of times the content will do timer-based reflows. After this number has been reached, the page will only reflow once it is finished downloading. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.notify.backoffcount in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 5 and click OK.
11. CONTENT SWITCH THRESHOLD
You can interact with a loading page when content.interrupt.parsing is set to true. When a page is loading, the application has two modes: a high frequency interrupt mode and a low frequency interrupt mode. The first one interrupts the parser more frequently to allow for greater UI responsiveness during page load.
The low frequency interrupt mode interrupts the parser less frequently to allow for quicker page load. The application enters high frequency interrupt mode when you move the mouse or type on the keyboard and switch back to low frequency mode when you had no activity for a certain amount of time. This preference controls that amount of time. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.switch.threshold in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.
12. NGLAYOUT INITIALPAINT DELAY
Mozilla applications render web pages incrementally, they display what’s been received
of a page before the entire page has been downloaded. Since the start of a web page
normally doesn’t have much useful information to display, Mozilla applications will wait
a short interval before first rendering a page. This preference controls that interval. Rightclick (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 0 and click OK.

want some nice speeds.. i'd suggest you check out http://www.surfboardhacker.net
they sell Cable modems (for those that have ISPs like charter, comcast, time warner.. )
here is a test i ran on speedtest.net awhile ago on one of the modems they sell.

btw yeah.. sorta ironic a company that sells modems to speed up your internet, has a site that loads soo slow...

I can usually Google up my answer to computer hacker stuff in 15 minutes or so, but I am stumped at finding a solution for recording MMS streams within Firefox. So the help me question be:
Anybody know how to record MMS streams in Firefox? Shouldn't somebody have a hacked an add-on for that yet?
(Alternatively, how to do it on a Mac? The two old guards that I know of - VLC and CocoaJT - won't do it for this V1v1d link i got. Think because its a log in link.)

That looks like a good thing for Windows. I'd be down with something like that for Mac.

Thanks for this!!!
I had it, or something similar, a few years ago when Firefox was new... and after a HD crash, I lost this hack. Been looking for it ever since.

Can't say that I've had major speed issues with FF, but I think I can use this info. Much appreciated. ;)

I second the notion of re-starting ever-so-often to release currently-unused RAM.
After a day or so of active browsing, I can get my FF session up to well over 1G of real memory usage.
