View Full Version : What Books Are You Reading These Days?

I'm always reading a new book; in fact, I usually have a few going at any one time. The beauty of a good book is that it takes you to a new place or a new understanding about how life or people or organizations work.

Tell us what you are into these days.

Right now I am reading:

Work hard, study and keep out of politics!: Adventures and lessons from an unexpected public life / James A. Baker, III

The Natural: The misunderstood presidency of Bill Clinton / Joe Klein

Dark nights of the soul: A guide to finding your way through life's ordeals / Thomas Moore

True North: Discover your authentic leadership / Bill George

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the inner game of wealth / T. Harv Eker

The Hoax / Clifford Irving

The Jesus Machine: How James Dobson, Focus on the Family, and evangelical America are winning the culture war / Dan Gilgoff

The new American story / Bill Bradley

I just finished What's the Matter with Kansas? by Thomas Frank and On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Now I'm deciding whether to go with One Hundred Years of Solitude or Keep the Aspidistra Flying next.

ÜberDork, you may like the first book, which is subtitled How Conservatives Won the Heart of America :016:

I have a collection of American Revolutionary War books/novels. My favorite series is by Richard Ketchum (Saratoga, Yorktown, etc...). He really brings the battles to life and makes it all the more amazing that we won.

Well Dracula from Bram Stoker (the originel book, the first one to introduce Dracula) is a classic, and she should read that one if she hadn't yet.

Ask her about Laurel K. Hamilton... She's quite good. Google, and you'll see lots of info.

100 Bullshit Jobs...And How to Get Them
by Stanley Bing

Book Description

The scholarly discipline of Bullshit Studies has blossomed in the last several years, fertilized by a number of critical works on the subject and the growing importance of the issue across a wide range of professions. Now, best-selling author and lifelong practitioner Stanley Bing enters the field with a comprehensive look at the many attractive jobs now available to those who are serious about their bullshit and prepared to dedicate their working life to it.

What, Bing inquires, do a feng shui consultant, new media executive, wine steward, department store greeter, and Vice President of the United States have in common? What, too, are the actual duties performed by a McKinsey consultant? Other than sitting around making people nervous? Could that possibly be his core function? Likewise, what does an aromatherapist actually do, per se? Sniff things and rub them on people, for big fragrant bucks? Is that all?

The answer in all cases is "Yes." They all have bullshit jobs.

These few, of course, are just the beginning. Across the length and breadth of this shrinking globe, skillful bullshit artists have secured pleasant, lucrative employment, and are enjoying themselves more than you are. In virtually every occupation, from Advertising to Yoga Franchising, lucky individuals who "work" in these coveted positions enjoy the best lives imaginable -- they are paid well, they rarely break a sweat, and their professions are highly respected, because nobody really knows what they do.

At once funny, useful, and tolerably philosophical, this groundbreaking work takes a close look at 100 bullshit jobs -- the money they bring with them, the actual tasks and activities involved (if any), and famous and successful examples of each position, who will provide the neophyte with inspiration. Most crucially, Bing goes on to offer what others so far have not--a clear, concise strategy to help job-seekers at every level reach for that brass ring, knowing full well that it may be attached to the nose of a bull.

I'm currently reading "Columbine" by Dave Cullen. It's pretty much the final word on the whole Columbine High School massacre. It reveals a lot of new information and dispels most of the rumors that were circulated at the time. It's sad stuff, but a fascinating look at how it happened.

Washington's Secret War: The Hidden History of Valley Forge (Hardcover)

I'm a bit of a history buff. It's about the American Revolution, a reinterpretation by Flemming and that's all I will comment on the matter. I'm only about 100 pages in and most everything said thus far seems more or less believable and common knowledge. A good read so far.

I had Hunter Thompson trip not long ago. I Hell's Angels and a bit before that I finally tackled Fear and Loathing n the Campaign Trail of 72 which had been sitting on my shelf for ages. I have a few other books that have been waiting to be read but none of them grab me. I really want to get hold of some completely new things.

I really don't read many books and when I do I usually just stop reading. But Under the Dome by Stephen King was very interesting. I don't know if its because I've always enjoyed his books or that the storyline grabbed my full attention. But it's very similar to The Simpson Movie where a town is under a down as you learn about the interactions of people without outside influences.

I still have ~100 pages left and up to now its been amazing. I just can't wait to read the end!

I can't really remember the last book I've read. Not much of a reader. Maybe if it has something to do with music. I heard The Dirt was pretty good. It's about a rock band Motley Crue.

The last book I read was called "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics" by Bate et al. It is a very educational read for anyone interesting in orbital mechanics and curvilinear motion dynamics. It covers the basic equations of orbital mechanics, and their derivations, as well as the basic equations of motion for an object in curvilinear motion. The book is primarily targeted for satellites in orbit above the surface of the earth, but the same principals can be applied to any object in orbit around a mass body. As a conclusion to the book, it covers the basic principals and equations used for ground tracking of satellites in motion.

Probably the most interesting book I've read recently was an old one: "Inherit the Stars" (I forget who the author is). If you're into Sci-Fi you can find tons of book at Baen.com. They have a free library with some recent stuff that's pretty good. You can get some of David Weber's Honor Harrington stuff there.

Good book! have you read the other Dan Brown books? I have read all of them. They got me back into reading. Nice short chapters. quick moving

Bible...ends badly but thats in the middle...gets better on the 3rd day....

Man, I wish I could read the Bible...I mean, I know I CAN, but the wording is hard for me to keep a hold of . not sure if you know what I mean, Not sure if I can describe it very well. Just wish I would read the Bible more.

Books I have read lately...I have just finished the latest book by Vince Flynn. He is a local author getting some national attention. He has a series of books that include his main character, Mitch Rapp. Kind of a political thriller series. VERY good!

Anybody into fantasy? There's a great series called A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. Kind of long, but REALLY well written. Especially if you're a fan of a more gritty, realistic (almost magic free) fantasy story

Sword of Truth series is very good. I think I read the first 5 in the series but haven't had time to catch up. If you enjoy fantasy, check out Robert Jordan. Hmmm, it wouldn't allow me to post a link to Amazon. Just search for him on Amazon and it'll give you a link to his novels.

But in the end, they're all a variation of the original, Lord of the Rings ;) :D
