View Full Version : 45% of Americans Support Impeaching Bush

Nearly half of the US public wants President George W. Bush to face impeachment, and even more favor that fate for Vice President Dick Cheney, according to a poll out Friday.

The survey by the American Research Group found that 45 percent support the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Bush, with 46 percent opposed, and a 54-40 split in favor when it comes to Cheney.

The study by the private New Hampshire-based ARG canvassed 1,100 Americans by telephone July 3-5 and had an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points. The findings are available on ARG's Internet site.

The White House declined to comment on the poll, the latest bad news for a president who has seen his public opinion standings dragged to record lows by the unpopular war in Iraq.

The US Constitution says presidents and vice presidents can be impeached -- that is, formally charged by the House -- for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors" by a simple majority vote.

Conviction by the Senate, which requires a two-thirds majority, means removal from office.

Just two US presidents have been impeached: Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and acquitted in 1999; Andrew Johnson was impeached and acquitted in 1868. Disgraced president Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 when a House impeachment vote appeared likely.

In late April, left-wing Representative Dennis Kucinich, a long-shot Democratic presidential hopeful, introduced a resolution calling for Cheney's impeachment. To date, the measure has nine listed co-sponsors and a 10th set to sign on when the House returns to work next week.

But Democratic leaders appear unlikely to pursue such a course.

I'm a West Coast Liberal. As much as I dislike Bush and Cheney, I don't support impeaching them. However, if there could be a recall election--similar to what was done in California in 2003--I would support that action.

What do you think?

i don't think it's worth the effort at this stage... he's almost done anyways, like him or hate him. on a side note, i don't think 1,100 Americans is half of the US public. :dunno:

Impeaching him? No. He's 7 yrs into his time as President. Why bother? It would take many months to get the fat cats in line for the procedure. And by then, he'll be gone anyway.

Lynching, however, makes much more sense.

I agree that impeaching either Bush or Cheney is pointless this late in their terms. But I do think that Congress should do something just to warn future presidents that it won't be pushed around again so easily. Bush has so expanded and abused the powers of the executive branch that Congress needs to rein them back in again before they end up as a moot rubber stamp.

a little too late but since dick/bush have a complete disregard for the law...it is the duty of the congress to hold their feet to the fire

Like I said, lynching makes more sense.

I like the idea our fore fathers had,

When a tyrannical leader, or group of leaders, come into power it's time to revolt.

Just my opinion

Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reason.

lol lol lol I've never heard it put quite like that.

I don't know why everyone is so concerned about which party is in power. You can rest assured that whoever is will F*** everything up so bad that the people will want a change. The Democrats had all the power from 1992-1994 but f***** everything up and lost it in the 1994 elections while the Republicans had all the power from 2000-2006 but f***** everything up and lost it in the 2006 elections. I like the split power options (Democrats in White House, Republicans in Congress, or vice versa) so neither one of them can screw things up so bad.

As for impeachment, I say no. We'll have a new president in 2009 anyway. Why waste the effort?

I prefer an older idea.....

A belt, wrist or ankle device that causes great pain for a few seconds every five minutes until their approval rating rises above 50%.

I believe that for all politicians....... like the schoolyard bully, until you put a man in distress for it, he won't give a shit about what he does to others.

I know I'm just talking crap, it'll never happen, but it sure would increase attention to accountability. :D

I don't see many politicians being held accountable for their actions these days.
However, I am held accountable for my actions, as I'm sure everyone reading this is too.

It's pretty simple to me.

He's abusing the power of his office to shield his subordinates from facing justice for breaking the law, and ensuring they won't be under any pressure to testify against him. It's obstruction of justice.

The only logical course is to remove him from the office that allows him to do this.
