I know there are ways lash up an iPod to your car audio system, but does there exist an after-market in-dash receiver where you can actually insert the iPod nano itself?

So far I have not heard of it. I have one from Alpine and it uses a high speed cable. I absolutely love it. I can't remember the last time I listened to a radio station!!

Here's an example. This car is only available in Japan

So far most vehicles require a cable or iPod integration kit. Some cars (Lexus, Chrysler, etc.) actually have a hard drive where you can store music on.

Ultimately, and probably soon, there will be iPod integration as standard equipment where you can simply plug the Ipod in, it is fully integrated into the music system, and then you are rockin'.

Right, and considering that,
(A) I don't won't have a cable sticking out of my console or a dock mounted to the side in some half-ass way, and
(B) I want to be able to control the iPod from the stereo,

..I decided to go in Fry's the other day to check out the wares for new in-dash stereos. There was a load of CD stereos. They even had a couple of cassette(!) player stereos, but nothing you could stick an iPod in. What is this, 1994? The aftermarket car audio industry is dragging its ass. The aftermarket car audio industry is dragging its ass. Wake up and smell the coffee lamos:013:The aftermarket is definitely dragging their ass because the iPod makes their equipment basically obsolete. Most people who plug their iPod into their car never use the CD player or receiver again. I don't follow much the aftermarket, but I would guess that consumer demand will dictate a better solution.

You put the iPod in the glovebox and leave it there where it full integrates with the car. The new iPhone is the category killer where you integrate not only the music but the cellphone with available BlueTooth.

My guess is that in a year or two, you will be able to slip the iPod directly into a slot in the instrument panel. At least that is what I hope will happen.
